Sequoia's mobile payment terminals help colleges and universities accept campus cards at non-traditional points of sale.
At a major east coast university, a campus-sponsored student group runs a series of coffee shops. Because they operate outside normal campus food services and sales volumes are low, they could not obtain the same point-of-sale solutions used by other dining locations. Thus they could not accept payment cards or declining balance, and because the modern student hardly ever carries cash, sales lagged. That was until one enterprising student signed up for a merchant account and started using small mag stripe-accepting payment reader that hooked into his personal smart phone. Other student workers followed his lead and got their own readers. This enabled the coffee shops to accept open loop payments. Periodically, the students would transfer the proceeds from their personal bank accounts to the group’s account.
Mt. View, California - Sequoia Retail Systems announces a major pilot launching Monday, September 21st in collaboration with the University of California Irvine Bookstore “The Hill” featuring Sequoia’s new mobile application, Traverse, designed to help students save time and money. The Traverse program, which launched in March of 2015, helps students shop in-store more efficiently by providing a mobile application that loads the students’ textbooks into the app and price compares new, used, rental and online prices of the textbooks. When students are ready to checkout, Traverse gets students out of the store quickly with the Traverse Express Checkout option, only available to Traverse app users. In addition, the application interacts with in-store beacons that broadcast a Bluetooth signal to students’ mobile phones with push notifications providing students access to exclusive coupons, daily deals, and real-time offers.
To further promote the program and promote their textbook affordability options, The Hill’s marketing team is promoting Traverse to students and encouraging downloads of the application.
Students who participate in the launch will be eligible to win one of six textbook scholarships available towards their Winter 2015 Quarter. Additionally, one lucky student will win a set of Beats by Dr. Dre headphones and an iPod Nano as a result of sharing The Hill’s Facebook post about the textbook scholarship.
Sequoia designed and launched the application with participating stores because they believe Traverse will reinvent retail for college stores by improving the way customers shop and help keep the college store relevant. Kim Vater, Director at ‘The Hill” bookstore at UCI says “Following UCI’s passion for innovation and The Hill's commitment to providing affordable textbooks, Traverse is a natural solution that can provide students savings in both time and money. We are excited to bring this technology to our store and are looking forward to interacting with our customers in the mobile retail space.”
We will be attending the following shows in the Fall of 2015.
We look forward to seeing you there!
